Exchanging Ugandan shillings in Katowice
One Ugandan shilling is equal to 100 cents. The Ugandan shilling was first introduced into circulation in 1966, replacing the East African shilling issued for East Africa by Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika, and Zanzibar. Due to high inflation, in 1987 Uganda introduced a 100-cent denomination and a new Ugandan shilling.
Interestingly, historically, the term shilling was a common name for many Western European coins in the Middle Ages. The word shilling itself comes from a corruption of the Germanized name solidus (from the Latin solidus, meaning solid, massive), a Roman gold coin issued in 309 AD by Emperor Constantine. Until the fall of Constantinople, the fixed currency was the reference currency in Western Europe.
Uganda currently has banknotes in denominations of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 shillings, and also exchanges coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 shillings.
