Tongan Panga exchange in Katowice
Current exchange rate of the Tongan panga to the Polish zloty at the MAX currency exchange office in Katowice
The official currency of the Pacific Kingdom of Tonga, sometimes informally referred to as the Tongan dollar. One paang is divided into 100 seniti (cents). The Tongan paang was introduced in 1967, replacing the Tongan pound, which at the time was equivalent to the Australian pound. Interestingly, when Tonga decided to adopt a decimal currency (a pound was equal to 20 shillings and 240 pence), the authorities decided not to use the Australian name "dollar," as the local word for dollar, tola, meant "pig's snout" among the natives. At the same time, the word paanga, taken from the Tongan currency, simply translated as "money." Currently, coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 seniti are in circulation, as well as banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 paanga. It is worth noting that the country also has a 1 hau (hau) coin, equal to 100 paangs, but it is more likely to circulate among numismatics than in everyday circulation.
