The Brunei dollar has been the currency of the Sultanate of Brunei since 1967. It is commonly abbreviated as $ for dollar and is divided into 100 sems (in Malay) or cents (in English). The currency code is BND. The Brunei dollar is pegged to the Singapore dollar at a 1:1 rate, as Singapore is one of Brunei's main trading partners. In 1967, banknotes in denominations of $1, $5, $10, $50, and $100 were introduced, followed by $500 and $1,000 banknotes in 1979. In 1989, the country's name on the banknotes was officially changed to Negara Brunei Darussalam (State of Brunei Darussalam). That same year, $10,000 banknotes were introduced. All bills are written in both Malay (with duplicates in Latin and Arabic characters) and English. The English name appeared on the obverse below the Malay name and on the same line as the Javanese.
