The Bahraini Dinar is the official currency of the Kingdom of Bahrain. One Bahraini dinar is equal to 1,000 fils. Generally speaking, the dinar monetary unit is one of the oldest common currencies in African and European countries. In Bahrain, the dinar was introduced into circulation in 1959 and since then it has been the only legal and official means of payment in the country. Currently, banknotes in denominations of 0.5, 1, 5, 10 and 20 dinars and coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 fils are in circulation. Previously, the Indian rupee was in circulation in Bahrain, and then the Persian Gulf rupee (introduced on April 28, 1959). The issuance of the national currency of the Kingdom of Bahrain was first handled by the Bahrain Monetary Board (from 1964 to 1973), and then by the Bahrain Monetary Agency (from 1973), which was renamed the Central Bank of Bahrain in 2006. Bahraini dinars are decorated with images of Bahraini architectural monuments, national ornaments. The Bahraini dinar is one of the most stable and most expensive currencies in the world.
