The Aruban florin is divided into 100 cents and was introduced in 1986, replacing the Netherlands Antillean guilder. The florin was introduced in Aruba in 1986, replacing the Netherlands Antillean guilder at a 1:1 ratio. The currency was pegged to the US dollar at a guilder exchange rate of 1.79 florin to 1 dollar. Coins in circulation include 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents, 1 and 2.5 florin coins, and banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200 florins. In 2005, the 5 florin banknote was replaced by coins, and a 500 florin banknote was introduced, while the 2.5 florin coin was withdrawn. All coins are made of nickel-plated steel, except for the 5 florins, which are minted from an alloy of copper and other metals. The 50 cent coin is the only coin issued in a square shape, also called a jotin.
